| Does Flying an Aussie Flag in Car Means Something? |
|
The title itself has the question, and do you think that it is connected to something? 'Yes, it is' says a research done on 'Australia Day' last year to find out whether there was a link between car flag flying and racist attitudes. When I came across this report, it prompted me to ask the same question to one of my friends who has spend most of his years in Australia. He is now with Oracle Advertising. And, he said," there's a notion like that going, that if one had to be a true Australian, they should have something of their country to show patriotism, and the flag the ideal choice". Many of the respondents who responded for the surveys and agreed to have a flag in their car had the fear that their culture was in deterioration and believed that the country’s most important values were in danger. Some of the flag flyers felt that people had to be born in Australia to be truly Australian, while some believed that true Australians had to be Christian. Many felt strongly patriotic about flying flags - and for some, this was quite a racist or exclusionary type of patriotism - but it wasn't a particularly conscious thing for many. But none had a clear idea as to why they had flags on their car. While then one is with a counter argument that flying an Australian flag on a car may actually be a sign of disrespect for the country. But, I myself don't feel that are any strong points that will make the research valid.
